I began writing this as soon as I put the book down. In fact, I am writing this intro last because I wanted to get all my ideas out first. I read it all in one sitting (minus the first 20 pages). I have so much to say about this book, so let’s just get on in.
Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is a poetry book that I’m sure you have all heard of. It’s been all over Tumblr and Twitter for months now, and rightfully so. I am a huge poetry fan, so I knew I would get around to reading this eventually, and I can honestly say I am glad I did.
It’s not what I expected. Whether that is a good or bad thing can be interpreted by you because to be quite honest, I’m not sure.
The poems had so much raw emotion behind them. I drank up every word. I have many post-it notes marking up the pages I loved. Some of them made me think about life in a whole new perspective. They gave me hope.
It is so simplistic but gets the point across in very few words. I think that is something many authors/poets struggle with most but Rupi has definitely perfected.
Each poem is so powerful and strengthening. It made me feel unstoppable; It made me soar. This book is something everyone needs to read.
It deals with rape, equality, heartbreak, and kindness. It teaches you to love yourself and all your flaws. To know your worth and not allow a man to take anything away from you. I really appreciated the ideas and messages. The messages may be a little cliché, but the way Rupi puts them into words is phenomenal.
Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy as many poems as I had hoped. I wanted to like every single one, but I know that is too optimistic. But this book just had so much hype to it, that I hoped I would fall in love with it more. Don’t get me wrong, the writing is amazing, but I hoped for more.
Usually when something is very mainstream I don’t enjoy it as much. I think that’s why I didn’t like this book as much as I had hoped. Also, it was a bit repetitive. Some of the poems were very similar to each other, but that might have also been intentional. Just not something I liked about it too much.
In the end, this book was a really nice, quick read. I recommend it to anyone over the age of 15 as some of the topics were a bit risqué.
Rating: 4.5/5 stars!
Let me know if you have read this book before because I would love to know your thoughts!
I agree with you! I loved Milk and Honey because it was so raw! and I loved how it was divided into 4 parts because everyone could relate to at least one part. I particularly loved the last one <3
